Columbus Georgia Medical Cannabis Card

Getting from Columbus to Atlanta means I-185 north to I-85, roughly two hours in good conditions. There is no fast route. For a patient in Columbus, Phenix City, Fort Moore or the surrounding Chattahoochee Valley, an in-person certification appointment in Atlanta consumes the better part of a day.

The telehealth visit takes place by video from home. A patient books, completes the intake, uploads documentation and joins the appointment from a phone. That is the whole logistical footprint.

Columbus care centers on two systems: Piedmont Columbus Regional, which operates the Midtown and Northside campuses and is the region's largest provider, and St. Francis-Emory Healthcare on Manchester Expressway. Both offer patient portals where visit notes, imaging reports and laboratory results can be downloaded directly.

The John B. Amos Cancer Center in Columbus produces the oncology pathology and staging documentation that cancer patients need for certification. Patients whose neurology, rheumatology or pain management care is with an independent Columbus practice can request records from that office directly, and most will send them electronically.

Fort Moore anchors the Columbus area, and the region has a large active-duty, retired and veteran population. Veterans with documented diagnoses — PTSD from direct exposure to or witnessing of a trauma is a qualifying condition for patients at least 18 years of age — can usually retrieve records through the VA portal, and TRICARE beneficiaries through their treating clinic.

Active-duty service members should be aware that federal policy governs their situation independently of state law. Georgia's registry is a state program; it does not change federal rules. Marijuana is not legal in Georgia, and the registry permits registered patients to possess medical cannabis products as state law allows.
