Most physicians who certify for the Georgia registry are clustered in metro Atlanta. For a Savannah patient, an in-person appointment there means about four hours of driving each way on I-16 through Dublin and Macon, a full day away from work, and fuel. Coastal Georgia patients have historically been underserved for exactly this reason.

A telehealth visit removes the drive entirely. A patient in the Historic District, Southside, Pooler, Garden City, Tybee Island or on Wilmington Island books a time, uploads records and identification to the telehealth platform, and joins by video from home. The certification decision is made the same way it would be made in an office.

Savannah care concentrates in two systems. Memorial Health University Medical Center on Waters Avenue is the region's Level I trauma center and academic teaching hospital, and its patient portal provides access to notes, imaging and laboratory results. St. Joseph's/Candler, with its two hospital campuses and a large network of affiliated practices across Chatham and Effingham counties, provides portal access as well.

Coastal patients also frequently see specialists in Savannah for conditions diagnosed elsewhere — cancer care at the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion, for example, produces exactly the pathology and staging records the certification review needs. If records sit with a clinician outside Savannah, they can be requested from that physician with your permission.

Hurricane season and coastal evacuation orders periodically disrupt routine appointments in Chatham County. A telehealth visit can be rescheduled or joined from wherever you are, which matters more here than it does inland.

Savannah also has a substantial retiree and veteran population. Veterans receiving care through the VA can typically download mental health and specialty notes from the VA patient portal.
